Anniversary exhibition at CAM Raleigh through August 7

It’s been a busy past few months, most notably with having a fantastic first stop to the traveling exhibition “20 Years of Horse & Buggy Press (and friends!), which debuted high above the banks of New Hope Creek at Cassilhaus during May. Cassilhaus, an amazingly beautiful home, gallery, and artist residency program designed and run by Frank Konhaus and architect Ellen Cassilly is one of the true gems of our area. They put on an amazingly rich and diverse set of exhibits and events at their place. I highly suggest getting on their mailing list.

The H&B anniversary exhibit is now up and running at CAM Raleigh (there are over 200 pieces in the show including all eighteen fine press books I’ve produced, some of which have the last few copies for sale) and there’s a series of talks (all free) with a bunch of the collaborators in the coming weeks.

Later this summer and continuing through the fall you will see a veritable explosion of blogposts profiling the bevy of book projects I’ve produced in the last few years and a few of the larger commissioned projects. I’m very excited about Journey, a 112 page book of photomontage by Catharine Carter which I just finished printing the covers for yesterday. The first 10 or 20 copies of the edition should be on hand at the Sunday, July 31 event at CAM Raleigh (see newsletters above more info). There will also be a giclee/lettepress broadside edition produced.

Roses: The Late French Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke

Roses: The Late French Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke

Roses is a 224 page interdisciplinary investigation into Rilke’s late work, written in French instead of his native German, and produced with the utmost attention to detail and quality in materials.

Poet and poetry scholar David Need has been working on these translations for many years. The book presents the original French poems alongside David’s translations to English, and each of the 27 poems in the Roses series is accompanied by a pen and ink drawing by Clare Johnson. An essay by David, a series of appendix poems, and elaborate endnotes offer additional perspectives into Rilke’s work.

The books are offset printed in two colors using high-end heavyweight paper with a tactile eggshell finish, and the covers are partially hand-printed on the letterpress with wraparound foredge flaps. Each book includes a custom printed bookmark and is numbered and hand-signed by the author.

Roses sells for only $30, despite all the high-end production touches.

UPDATE. April 2016. There are less than ten signed and numbered copies remaining from the first printing. These now sell for $60 (the second printing sells for the original $30 price, the second printing does not have hand-printed covers but does utilize the same  -high-end paper and binding)..

TESTIFY: A Visual Love Letter to Appalachia

The thirteenth fine press title to be published under the Horse & Buggy Press imprint has been completed and as of the first week of May 2014, books began out into the world.

TESTIFY: A Visual Love Letter to Appalachia

Testify: A Visual Love Letter to Applachia  is a  two volume, limited edition  featuring fifty images (black and white, as well as full color), an introduction by photographer Roger May, and a foreword by Silas House. Interior pages are printed on a high-end Indigo press using 100lb Mohawk Superfine eggshell finish text paper.

The covers are hand-printed on the letterpress, and each book is hand-sewn with linen thread. The limited edition of 300 copies is signed and numbered by Roger. The two volumes are presented together with a full-bleed printed bellyband, and include a bookmark and a photographic print (suitable for framing) housed in a translucent envelope.

Excerpt from Roger’s introduction . . .

Testify is a visual love letter to Appalachia, the land of my blood. This is my testimony of how I came to see the importance of home and my connection to place. After moving away as a teenager, I’ve struggled to return, to latch on to something from my memory. These images are a vignette into my working through the problem of the construction of memory versus reality. My work embraces the raw beauty of the mountains while keeping at arms length the stereotypical images that have tried to define Appalachia for decades.

Original price was $65. There are less than ten copies remaining and they are now selling for $125. If you know a publisher who would be introduced to produce a second printing or to work with Roger for an expanded/updated edition, please let me (or Roger) know.

Roger May (b. 1975) is an Appalachian American photographer currently living in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born in the Tug River Valley, located on the West Virginia and Kentucky state line, in the heart of Hatfield and McCoy country. He served in the U.S. Army for seven years. He is currently enrolled in the Certificate in Documentary Arts program at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, where he has also worked as a part-time instructor.

Poster for Ninth Street Derby

As a cyclist myself, I was excited to design the poster for the bicycle criterium held on Ninth Street this past spring.

The event was organized by former Duke cycling coach Rusty Miller (he’s since moved down to Greenville, South Carolina).

This was a quick turnaround keep the costs down project that we were all very happy with, especially the high quality photograph reproductions that Zebra Printing of Morrisville was able to achieve on their digital printer.

Dialogues Booklet for Center for Art + Thought

The Center for Art + Thought is a unique, web-based nonprofit organization that believes “that the convergence between art and critical thought is a crucial way to generate new modes of knowledge production and creative and critical lenses for understanding and transforming global conditions.”

Their DIALOUGES project brings together a selection of artists, writers, and scholars for a sustained, thematically-driven conversation and this summer the Center commissioned me to produce a fine press booklet of this series’ first installation.

The debut issue “Migrant Musicians: Filipino Entertainers and the Work of Music Making” brings together four individuals in a converstation moderated by Sarita Echavez See. Informed by their creative and scholarly work as well as their own experiences, they reflect on how Filipino musicians have circulated as part of a global entertainment industry. Their discussion ranges from their family memories and mythologies about music’s transportative power to their encounters with the legal realities of Filipino musicians’ experiences as overseas contract workers. As See remarks, the processes of migration and survival transform “living song into living labor”—a process that can disguise and deny the work that undergirds the making and feeling of music.

The forty page booklet was published in an edition of 150 hand-bound copies. The interiors were digitally printed in full color and I hand-printed the covers with black, metallic copper, and silver inks on black paper. Printing on black paper can always be a little risky but we were all happy with the result.

It is exciting on projects like this to show people you combine newer digital printing technologies with letterpress technology and hand sewn bindings to the benefit of the publication. And digital printing allows for creating editions in smaller edition sizes (unlike offset) and these smaller editions (usually 100-300 copies) are relatively easy to integrate special touches like letterpress printing and hand-sewn bindings which elevate the status of the publication to show readers the physical act of reading can still be a tactile, aesthetically rich experience.

Downtown Durham continues to be graced with more good restaurants opening up.

Over the past few months, I’ve enjoyed working with Justin Rakes, former chef at Four Square, who along with Scott Martin, will be opening up “The Salted Pig” in the near future somewhere in or near downtown. The menu will focus on higher-end pork based food items, locally sourced along with the produce, and feature a wide array of bourbons.

As they have been working on securing a location, I’ve been working with Justin on logo design, business cards, and event menus.

Hopefully it won’t be too long before The Salted Pig is up and running. It has been a while since I created the initial menu designs for Watts Grocery and Beyu Caffe, so I’m excited to work on another menu design project. Quite likely the interior of the restaurant will feature a lot of reclaimed wood for the furniture and on the walls. Thus, I don’t think the chipboard colored paper stock they initially were thinking of will work so well (warm tan paper on warm wood isn’t all that exciting), so one idea is to have soft pink paper menus for some contrast between menu and wood table. So, half of the initial run of business cards were printed with a soft pink background as we gauge whether this is an interesting idea or not.

The following is one of the many ideas played around with in the logo design development. Whether the connotation of a patch is a good thing or not, I’m not sure, but I’m thinking this could make a nice coaster…

Song of the Line review / Shop Independent Durham Week

Five years ago I published “Song of the Line.” This hardcover 112 page title features twenty years’ worth of poetry by Jack Gilbert, along with ten engravings created in response to a reading of these works by Jack’s friend and fellow Hillsboroughian Henryk Fantazos.

Our marketing department just unearthed a pretty great review of Song of the Line (from 2008). There is some great writing in this book, covering a variety of issues and emotions, and it has been fun to “rediscover” these gems through the reviewer’s eyes.

As part of Shop Independent Durham week, we will be open every day this week from 11am–2pm (Saturday 10am-2pm). Our come hither sale pitch is this: everyone who purchases this (or any other H&B book) will receive a free set of letterpress greeting cards.
