Silent Auction Fundraiser for Children First

Me and Annie’s son Miles (recently turned 3) has been attending Children First Preschool since early September. Children First is a non-profit Durham preschool in its third decade (and in fact Annie’s godson Matthew Brondoli went to it many moons ago. When Annie was pregnant with Miles we asked Matthew for some child raising advice and Matthew quickly said “Make sure he goes to Children First for preschool.”) Miles is loving it, he’s one of 12 kids ages 3-5, and we are very thankful for the great teachers Donna and Sarah, a fantastic indoor and outdoor learning environment, and a great bunch of kids and parents we are enjoying getting to know along with Miles.

I’m donating a few Horse & Buggy Press books and such for a silent auction to benefit the school. This silent auction is up and ends Friday, December 5th at Noon. 100% of the winning bids go to Children First and a letter for a charitable gift tax deduction can be provided if desired.

Items are described below (with linkage for more info). To bid on something just send an email to Donna, her email is and she will put your bid down, keeping you in the loop as others bid on your item to ensure you have the opportunity to bid higher!

Yuri’s Brush with Magic.
—Written by the late Maureen Crane Wartski (Raleigh) this is a great novel for ages 9-13. I designed this for Durham’s Sleepy Hollow Books (Amy Spaulding) , and the book features illustrations by Jason Strutz (Chapel Hill) and Alice Xiang (Durham). The story is set at Topsail Beach and touches on loggerhead turtles, photography, and dealing with the loss of a loved one and family relationships in a sensitive and uplifting way. “Weaving Japanese folklore and contemporary detail into a thoughtful novel, Wartski deftly handles themes of family, art, and forgiveness.”—Jacqueline Ogburn

Cold Running Creek.
Award-winning novel by  Zelda Lockhart (Hillsborough)
“Poignant, haunting, and invested with a lyrical style, Cold Running Creek brings the twin horrors of removal and slavery in close orbit with one another. The result is devastating. As Lockhart freely imagines the pathos and potentialities of Native and African American crossings, she tells a tale that will set a generation of readers in search of more stories of southern Black/Indian experience.”—Sharon Holland
