Roses: The Late French Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke (in progress)

We are making good progress on the fourteenth title to be published under the Horse & Buggy Press imprint.

Roses: The Late French Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke

Translations, Introduction,  & Essay by David Need
Drawings by Clare Johnson

This 224 page interdisciplinary investigation into Rilke’s late work should be completed by late spring.

Poet and poetry scholar David Need has been working on these translations for many years. The book presents the original French poems alongside David’s translations to English, and each of the 27 poems in the Roses series is accompanied by a pen and ink drawing by Clare Johnson. An essay by David, a series of appendix poems, and elaborate endnotes offer additional perspectives into Rilke’s work.

The book will be offset printed in two colors using high-end heavyweight book paper, and the covers will be partially hand-printed on the letterpress with wraparound foredge flaps. Each book will include a custom printed bookmark.

Roses will sell for $30.

  1. Hey Dave, I am so glad you are doing this. How do I place a pre-order?

    Hey Jeffery,

We are having a great time with the book. Design is very near completion.

The price will most likely be $35. I’m still working on an order form to be added here. Hopefully that will be posted soon.

I am keeping a sign up sheet for all all early bird orders in the meantime. 20% off for early bird orders is $28, plus $2.14 for NC Sales tax is $30.14.

Shipping and handling will be $4 on top of that for most people.

No charge for you and I’d be happy to drive a copy out your way when all is said and done. Certainly seems like a good excuse to see you and catchup.

Checks need to be made out to my individual name, Dave Wofford, because my checking account is a credit union which doesn’t allow the use of business name. Send checks to 401-B Foster Street, Durham NC 27701 along with an email address (so I can share updates) and the mailing address where books should be sent (or let me know if you would rather pick up your book at studio to avoid shipping charge). I can process credit cards, but only in the studio; I don’t have online merchant services set up.

We are hoping to have books in hand by early May. and we are also working on some reading events too of course.

    Best wishes, Dave
